home search must-haves
Issue 93 - July 15th, 2022
A house purchase is one of the largest (and most infrequent) transactions most people experience in their entire lives. When it comes to making the decision to move onto to a new home or purchase your first home you need to really think long and hard about what you want most in your future home. The process can be super overwhelming if you don’t take a little time to define some “must-have” parameters before setting sail into the wild world of home shopping.
When I was working as an agent full-time, I would always ask my clients to write down the top 3 must-haves in a home and really distill them down into a simple checklist. For some people these items included a certain school district, a certain number of bedrooms, or a particular style such as condo/townhome while other people may zone in on certain factors such as proximity to work, family, or other items.
The home “wish list” is different for every single home buyer on this planet, but in order to maximize your search process and focus, you need to define the 3 must-have items and scratch any property that doesn’t fit into this box even if you LOVE the home for other reasons.
Whenever you see a home online that you like or go visit a home in person, you need to always revert back this checklist to make sure it fits your well-defined and thought out parameters. This filtering process sounds simple and straightforward but this exercise will save you tons of time and brain energy and help you find a home that best fits your ideal wishlist. Finding a perfect home is tough, but finding a home you love that fits your “must-have” list is the ultimate goal.
